Dr. Tyler H. Berryhill serves as the Coroner of Madison County, Alabama, which includes Alabama's largest city, Huntsville. The coroner serves as the chief medicolegal death investigator for the county and is responsible for administering the office. The coroner's office works to determine the cause, manner and circumstances of those deaths under investigation. Cases will require varying level of resources from medical records review, scene investigations, postmortem external examinations, toxicology analysis and complete forensic autopsies. The District Attorney of Madison County must be contacted and authorize any forensic autopsy to be performed through the Madison County Coroner's Office as the coroner's primary responsibility, by law, is to detect crime in this state related to deaths within our jurisdiction. The coroner is the first responder of the death investigation system & local administrator of the system.
Dr. Berryhill had previously served as an assistant coroner in the office, medicolegal death investigator and chief deputy coroner prior to becoming the Madison County Coroner in 2019. He is board certified in medicolegal death investigation. He additionally serves as a forensic consultant in medicolegal death investigation & bloodstain pattern analysis. His initial training in the field began with the medicolegal death investigation/forensic sciences professional training program completed under the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner, followed by over 1,200 hours of additional professional training courses, throughout the years, in the areas of: bloodstain pattern analysis, crime scene investigation, criminal investigations (general), foundations of courtroom testimony, forensic photography, homicide investigation, child and infant death investigation, mass fatality incident management, medicolegal death investigation, psychological autopsy protocols (suicide investigation assessment) as well as buried human remains & surface recovery training provided through the University of Tennessee's Forensic Anthropology Center ("The Body Farm"). Dr. Berryhill likewise completed graduate level academic studies in forensic medicine, forensic anthropology, forensic toxicology, etc. while completing the UF Masters of Medical Sciences Program (Forensic Death Investigation Cert.).
